Another day another cancer diagnosis

Posted by admin On March - 24 - 2007

Not sure what is going on in the world but I just received news yesterday that another indivdual has been diagnosed with cancer.  This should not be big news as there are probably thousands of people every day diagnosed with this horrific disease; but it is big news because of the smack in the face mortaility receives and because the individual diagnosed is one of the most driven people I know.

Is it the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe?  Are we just living longer and have more time to develop these diseases?  Or is medical science just finding better ways to detect what’s going on inside our bodies?  Whatever it is, it should be a wakeup call to all of us.  Life is short, and in a simple trip to the doctor’s office you can find out that it has just been shortened.  The time you spend with family and friends must be enjoyable and memorable, because when you or they are gone those memories are all that will be left.

Tomorrow someone else will be diagnosed with cancer.  Within the next three months someone I know will be diagnosed and sure enough those of you reading this blog will have the same happen.

I help a friend of mine raise money for Dana Farber every year.  He does a tremendous job and I know every ounce of sweat he puts into his campaign extends the life of someone somewhere to allow there friends and family to capture just one more memory.

The guy that helped me design by business blog, Brian Gardner, is on a similar campaign.  If you want to contribute to help cure breast cancer, go ahead an click here.

Pocket Aces, a poor decision pre-flop…or not?

Posted by admin On March - 23 - 2007

Don’t worry, I am not going to cry out some type of sob story about how I lost a hand with pocket aces this past Monday at the opening event of the Foxwoods Poker Classic.  That would be boring cause thousands of people every day get their aces ‘cracked’.

My story begins with sitting down at my table and finding Syracuse Chris Tsiprailidis to my left.   Was not too happy with that.  Within the 1st 20 minutes blinds at 25/50 I am dealt pocket AA.  Many things going through my head.  Raise and get Chris out, or limp and maybe get a chance to chip up early.   I decide to play Russian roulette and limp in (I am two away from the button, Chris is the small blind).  Dealer peels a 7-9-10 flop.   Chris tosses 400 into the pot and announces he just flopped the nuts.  The player to my right calls and I decide to see where he is really at and raise 1,500.  Chris pushes all-in.  I am thinking now, ‘Did he really flop the nuts?’  It does not matter because the guy to my right calls the all in.  With that board and two all ins in front of me laying down the aces and licking my wounds for putting 1900 into the pot was easy to do.

Sure enough, Chris flopped the nuts.  Guy to my right flopped 2 pair and thought Chris was full of it (as I did too initially).

I should be sending Chris and gift basket for going all in because if he did not, I am still in the hand and most likely pushing all my chips in on the turn.  I was kicking myself for limping in; but after replaying the hand I am not so sure I would have gotten my opponents to fold with a raise and after a pre-flop raise I am sure Chris would not have come over the top like he did.  I think the outcome would have been the same with Chris winning the hand but with me exiting the tournament very early.   I believe I forced his post flop all in because I did limp in, and he wanted me to fold any chance I was playing a draw on a gut-shot higher straight.

I know better then to limp in with AA but the craps player in me took over and decided to play the gamble.  Next time on a flop like that, I will let my opponent make the first big move and make the laydown that I know I am capable of.

Politics, taxes and snow

Posted by admin On March - 17 - 2007

For those of you outside of New Hampshire the big topic of discussion here aside from the upcoming NH primary  is property taxes.  You see…we here in New Hampshire have no income tax or sales tax and as quick as we are ready to live free or die ,we are not going to add those taxes to help pay for those little things like education; and at the same time we are going to storm our town halls at election time with pitchforks and torches at the ready because our taxes are too high.   Instead we are going to rely on $20 scratch tickets and pitting town against town to clean up the mess.  My fellow granite state citizens need to stop sipping the kool aid and wake up.

For the years 2005 and 2006, New Hampshire ranked 49 out of 50 states in regards to tax favorability.  Translation for those of you that can’t read a chart, “this is a kick ass state to live in if you don’t want to send your money to the Man.”  I have friends and relatives in NJ that pay up to 2x as much in property taxes on their home with the same market value; while also enjoying a state income tax line on their weekly pay stub and a sales tax on everything they purchase.  Still think you have it bad here?

No one wants to see their taxes go up but deductive reasoning would point out that if we moved up a couple notches on the scale we’d be able to pay for more stuff and maybe make life better for our seniors and children while also kicking the infrastructure up a notch in the state attracting more business to take full advantage of the NH advantage.  I’m not advocating moving up to 20 on the list, let’s call it a modest jump to 39 or 40.   Let’s just get the majority of the burden off property owners and start shifting the burden to those that are consuming and earning.  They are not going anywhere; Maine, Massachusetts and Vermont will still be higher on the list.  Get more companies, jobs and people in the state and maybe taxes would not have to go up as much.  Oh yeah, I forgot, most of the people that have lived here forever don’t want to see those people from out of state moving here; even if it means helping to provide a way to afford living in their home when they are on social security.

In life you always see that when you are sitting there thinking great thoughts and come up with a revolutionary great idea, you search the internet and find someone somwhere else has already done it.  It baffles me as to why when it comes to fixing societal woes this does not come into effect.  We have people out there in the world coming up with ideas for IPODs, FastLane transponders, and things to keep the cool side on your pillow always up.  Why can’t someone figure out the formula to provide all students with a consistent quality education, efficiently run a town/state government and develop the right tax structure to collect necessary revenues to keep the lights on and not stifle economic growth?

I think the answer lies somewhere in the mix of :

  • The sheer size of accomplishing these goals
  • All the special interests laying their speed bumps along the road to achieving progress
  • The quality of the candidate pool left behind after the private sector has snatched up all those destined for success in the business world where innovation, outsmarting your competition and making progress year after year are expected.

There are some very intelligent, hard working people elected to public office every year but when you see the same names and faces elected to positions year after year after year after year, in any elected position, you have to wonder how and why this happens.

Remember the slogan, “think global act local” ?  I’d love to take a survey and see how many of us out there that are hell bent on squashing the Bush or Clinton dynasties really take the time to see what families or retread candidates they have put into their local offices each election day.  How many elected positions run unopposed? We just had a town selectman run unopposed.  One of the most powerful positions in town was up for grabs and noone thought it was worth fighting for.  I think that is almost as pathetic as the fact that the voters here in town have revolted once again passing the 4th default budget in as many years.  Remember folks, there are a bunch of people meeting once a week that are responsible for these town budgets you are voting down.  One of two things needs to happen:

  • More than 3,000 in a town of over 14,000 need to participate in the election process (to promote full disclosure I was one of the 11,000 that did not vote this week and not because I did not want to…as my wife and daughter had their own warrant article on the ballot.)
  • We stop voting out budgets and start replacing those human beings responsible for creating and managing the budgets we vote down year after year.

Please don’t get me wrong.  We love living here in NH, especially on the Seacoast.  There are so many things to see and experience from the White Mountains to the shops and restaurants of Portsmouth to the offshore trek to the Isle of Shoals.  Yes, we have our problems; but so does everyone else.  I posted this today as we just received a new blanket of snow which always reminds me of wiping the slate clean and hoping we see some frsh new ideas coming our way.  We have been a little short on the white gold (as the plow guy calls it); but mother nature gave us a good dose yesterday afternoon and overnight.  It is nice to see a clean white blanket over the grass yellowed by winter and the toys in the yard that I have been telling the kids to get inside for the past week.

Casino chips…who do they really belong to?

Posted by admin On March - 16 - 2007

The next time you are at casino and decide to cash in someone else’s chips or accept chips from someone as repayment of a debt…you’d better think twice.

I guess I always knew the chips are the property of the casino.  If you find a $100 chip on the floor technically…it is not yours, it is the casinos and should be turned in (yeah right!).  Well this takes it to a whole new level.

New business venture underway - No Limits VIP

Posted by admin On March - 15 - 2007

For the past seven years I have run my own technology consulting firm, Arten Technology Group, Inc.  Yes, I know the web site is out of date but it is currently being revamped so be patient.  Running my own business has been a great experience and we have done well for the past seven years focusing primarily on IT consulting and custom software development in the financial services/insurance industry.   While developing software for the calculation of projected death benefits or predictive modeling of prospect to customer transitions may not be the most exciting subject to discuss across a coffee table; it does pay the bills.

A while back, my wife pulled me aside and commented on my interest in poker and said I should build “some kinda software” for poker.  I wish it were that easy…and with approx 10,000 online poker sites out there already…that idea was already taken.  It was always in the back of my mind and it was not until about 8 months ago when a unique opportunity presented itself and we are now where we are at today.

Early this week, a project of mine finally launched , No Limits VIP Club.  There is a lot to this, some on the sight more to follow in the near future.  But to provide you with the elevator speech, “No Limits VIP Club is going to be one of the leading tournament poker and tournament blackjack affinity groups in the country providing its members and marketing partners with priveledged access to opportunities unique only to the No Limits community.

If you are a member of the poker community (from the tournament circuit to the Thursday night home game)…don’t be shy.  Start contributing to our community at one of No Limits’  public forums and I look forward to bringing my vision to you in the near future.

Pi….its not just a number anymore

Posted by admin On March - 14 - 2007

I wasn’t going to post anything until tomorrow but I came across this.  There appears to be a growing cult worshiping the number Pi.  Prime candidates for NSA wiretapping if you ask me.  Never trusted math geeks.
